LSI 9400-8i 12Gbps SAS SATA Tri-Mode Host Bus Adapter

SKU CH-5JN9-TYHXA

12Gbps Tri-Mode host bus adapter supports SAS, SATA and NVMe drives through a single PCIe interface

  • 12Gbps SAS SATA throughput for fast storage access
  • Tri-Mode SerDes supports NVMe SAS and SATA devices
  • Broadcom LSI controller delivers reliable host bus adapter performance
  • PCIe interface enables flexible system design integration
  • 9400-8i model provides eight ports for multiple drive connections

Storage connectivity

The LSI 9400-8i is a 12Gbps SAS SATA Tri-Mode host bus adapter that connects internal drives to a PCIe bus. It supports SAS, SATA and NVMe devices through a single controller, allowing mixed drive populations in one server or workstation.

System builders adding internal storage

This adapter suits builders who need to attach multiple SAS or SATA drives and want the flexibility to add NVMe U.2 or U.3 devices later. It is not for users who only have external drive enclosures or who require a RAID-on-chip solution with onboard cache.

Tri-Mode SerDes

The defining specification is the Tri-Mode SerDes that lets each physical port negotiate SAS, SATA or NVMe signalling without extra cabling or interposers. This single capability decides whether the adapter matches the drive mix in your chassis.

Questions about this item

How can I confirm the 12Gbps Tri-Mode HBA is operating correctly after installation?

Check the system BIOS or operating-system device manager to verify the adapter appears at 12Gbps link speed and that connected SAS, SATA or NVMe drives are detected without errors.

What comes with the 9400-8i adapter and what must I purchase separately?

The retail package includes the host bus adapter only; cables, drive brackets and any NVMe, SAS or SATA drives are sold separately.

Which version of the 9400-8i should I choose for a mix of NVMe, SAS and SATA drives?

The single 9400-8i Tri-Mode model supports all three device types on its 12Gbps ports, so no alternate version is required for mixed deployments.
