External SAS/SATA HBA controller with two SFF-8644 ports delivering 12Gb/s over PCIe 3.0 x8
This card is a new LSI SAS 9300-8E host bus adapter built on the Broadcom SAS 3008 controller. It connects to a host over a PCI Express 3.0 x8 slot and presents two external SFF-8644 ports for SAS or SATA drives. The board supports transfer rates up to 12Gb/s per lane.
It suits administrators who need a simple, non-RAID path to external drive enclosures or JBOD shelves running Windows, Linux Red Hat, SUSE SLES, Solaris or VMware. A low-profile bracket and a full-height bracket are included for different chassis heights. It is not for buyers who want onboard RAID processing or hardware RAID offload.
The decisive specification is the pair of mini-SAS SFF-8644 connectors running at 12Gb/s each. If your cabling and backplane use that exact interface, the card will link at full speed; if they use a different connector or speed grade, you will need an alternative adapter.

Fit the low-profile or full-height bracket before seating the card in a PCIe 3.0 x8 slot, then connect the two SFF-8644 cables; the step people skip is downloading the driver from the supplied URL before first boot.
The card has no battery-backed cache or fan, so the only recurring task is keeping the SAS/SATA firmware and OS drivers current; replace the unit only if a port fails or the PCIe interface changes.
The PCIe 3.0 x8 host bus caps total throughput near 8 GB/s, so that bus ceiling is reached before the dual SFF-8644 ports saturate their individual 12 Gb/s links.
