Green PCB card with two silver Mini SAS SFF-8088 ports on bracket

LSI

LSI SAS2008 8-Port 6Gb/s External HBA network card

SKU CH-Z8JP-FWD63

External HBA connects up to 512 SAS or SATA devices over two Mini SAS SFF-8088 ports at 6 Gb/s

  • SAS2008 controller drives up to 512 devices
  • 2× Mini-SAS SFF-8088 ports for external JBOD arrays
  • PCIe 2.0 x8 host bus delivers 6 Gb/s SAS throughput
  • Same chipset as 9200-8E for proven compatibility

External SAS HBA for direct-attached storage

This host bus adapter uses the LSI SAS2008 controller to connect up to eight external SAS or SATA drives through two Mini SAS SFF-8088 ports. It fits a PCIe 2.0 x8 slot and presents every drive to the operating system in JBOD mode without hardware RAID overhead. The card targets administrators who need simple, non-RAID connectivity for tape libraries or drive enclosures.

Passive cooling and low power draw

A bare PCB with no active fan keeps the adapter silent in rack or workstation chassis. The SAS2008 chip is rated for 6 Gb/s per lane and draws modest power from the PCIe slot alone, so no auxiliary connector is required. Buyers who need hardware RAID acceleration or internal SATA ports should choose a different controller.

Questions about this item

How do I install the PCIe 2.0 x8 HBA and which step is often missed?

Seat the card firmly in an x8 or wider slot, attach the two Mini SAS SFF-8088 cables, then install the SAS2008 driver before the OS tries to enumerate the 512 supported devices.

What maintenance will the SAS2008 controller need over time?

Keep the firmware current for SAS/SATA compatibility, reseat the SFF-8088 cables if link errors appear, and verify airflow across the board since the chip has no active cooling.
