Battery-powered letter opener

The Martin Yale 1624 is a handheld electric letter opener that activates automatically when an envelope is inserted. It runs on four AA batteries sold separately, so no power outlet is needed. The fully enclosed rotary blades prevent accidental injury while trimming envelopes cleanly without ripping the contents.

Home and office users needing portable mail handling

This opener suits anyone who wants a compact, safe device for light daily mail at home, in a small office or carried in a briefcase. It is not designed for high-volume mailrooms that process large batches continuously. Buyers who need a mains-powered or heavy-duty desktop unit should look at something else.

Fully enclosed rotary blades for safe operation

The blades are completely shielded inside the housing, eliminating exposed cutting edges during use. This design protects fingers from injury while still delivering a neat cut on standard envelopes. The safety feature is the key specification that determines whether this model meets a buyer's requirement for risk-free handling.

Questions about this item

What are the dimensions of the Martin Yale 1624 letter opener?

The unit measures 5 1/4 inches wide by 1 3/4 inches long by 2 3/8 inches high, making it compact enough for a briefcase or desk drawer.

How do I install the batteries in the Martin Yale 1624, and what mistake should I avoid?

Insert four AA batteries into the compartment, ensuring the positive and negative ends match the diagram inside; the common error is reversing one cell, which prevents the auto-activation sensor from working.

The fully enclosed rotary blades are designed for long life; replace the four AA batteries when the motor slows, and clean any paper dust from the blade area periodically to maintain cutting performance.
