IDE Ultra ATA133 desktop storage

The Maxtor MaXLine II 5A320J0 is a 320GB 3.5 inch internal hard drive with a 5400 RPM spindle and 2MB cache. It connects through an IDE Ultra ATA133 interface and is supplied as a bare drive. The unit is designed for desktop computers and nearline storage roles.

Suits legacy IDE builds and bulk media archives

Users replacing a failed drive in an older IDE system or adding low-I/O bulk storage for media files will find the capacity and MTTF rating appropriate. Systems that require a Serial ATA connection or higher spindle speeds for primary workloads cannot use this drive.

Interface decides compatibility

The IDE Ultra ATA133 connector is the single specification that determines whether the drive fits the host. If the motherboard or controller provides only Serial ATA ports the drive will not install.

Questions about this item

Which MaXLine II capacity should I choose for a legacy desktop that only needs basic storage?

The 320GB model is the only capacity listed for this 5A320J0 drive, so it is the one to select if your system uses IDE and you want this specific series.

What does the 5400 RPM speed mean for everyday file access on an older motherboard?

At 5400 RPM with a 10ms average seek time and 2MB cache, the drive delivers steady throughput for media archives and backups rather than snappy OS performance.

How does the IDE Ultra ATA133 interface limit real-world transfer rates on a vintage board?

The ATA-7 interface caps the bus at 133 MB/s, but the 5400 RPM mechanism will typically sustain well below that ceiling in actual use.
