Retrieval tool for small metal objects

The Mayhew 17845 telescopes to reach fasteners or components that have fallen into tight engine bays, behind panels or inside machinery. Its magnetic tip lifts ferrous items weighing up to the rated pull capacity. Technicians, hobbyists and maintenance staff use it to avoid disassembly when a part drops out of sight.

Check the working space and target weight

Verify that the fully extended length of 32 in can reach the deepest recess you encounter without striking obstacles. Confirm the object you need to recover is ferromagnetic and light enough for the 3 lb pull rating; non-magnetic or heavier items will not be lifted. The PVC handle grip should suit the user's hand for controlled insertion and withdrawal.

Stainless shaft resists corrosion during normal use

The stainless steel shaft does not rust when exposed to coolant, oil or humidity, so the tool stays functional in workshop environments. The magnetic tip adds negligible mass, keeping the tool light enough for one-handed operation over long periods. No external power or moving parts are involved, so there is no noise, heat or electrical draw to manage.

Questions about this item

Does the Mayhew 17845 include any extra attachments or do I need to buy a separate case?

The tool ships as a single stainless-steel shaft with a PVC handle and a 3 lb magnet; no case or extra tips are included.

Should I choose the compact 7 1/2 in. length or the fully extended 32 in. reach for engine-bay work?

It is one tool that collapses to 7 1/2 in. for storage and telescopes to 32 in. when you need the extra reach.

Will the 3 lb magnetic pull hold a socket or bolt through a layer of grime in a real engine bay?

The 3 lb pull is rated for clean steel; oil, rust or paint will reduce the holding force, so wipe the target surface when possible.
