Versatile 2-in-1 for Mobile Work

The Surface Pro 4 1724 functions as both a tablet and a laptop with its detachable keyboard and kickstand. It suits students and professionals who need a single portable device for documents, web browsing and video playback. The 12.3-inch PixelSense touchscreen delivers a 2736 x 1824 resolution. Buyers who want more internal storage or a dedicated graphics card should look elsewhere.

Straightforward Setup with One Cable

Windows 10 installs drivers for the Intel Core i5-6300U, Intel HD Graphics 520 and 4GB LPDDR3 automatically, so the device is ready after the first boot. The single full-size USB 3.0 port handles most peripherals, though a hub is often needed for multiple accessories. The magnetic Type Cover connector aligns easily, but debris on the pins can cause intermittent keyboard detection.

Limits of the USB 3.0 and DisplayPort Interface

The USB 3.0 port caps external drive throughput at its native signalling rate, so large file transfers will be slower than on newer interfaces. Mini DisplayPort output supports one external monitor at the panel's native resolution. Bluetooth 4.1 and 802.11 ac Wi-Fi handle typical peripherals and networking, but they do not support the bandwidth or latency improvements of later wireless standards.
