External E-Clip for shaft retention

This MIDWEST FASTENER 70705 external E-clip secures components on shafts using spring deformation. It provides an interference fit onto a groove or land for reliable retention. Industrial users and mechanics install or remove it by elastically deforming the clip. The steel construction features a black phosphate finish.

Sustained load behavior

Under continuous vibration or axial force the clip maintains its grip through spring tension. The black phosphate coating resists corrosion during extended service. Installation requires elastic deformation each time the clip is seated or removed. Performance depends on correct groove sizing and material condition.

Upgrade and replacement context

This clip replaces worn or lost retaining rings on existing shafts. The jump is worth it when a secure interference fit is needed without threaded fasteners. Buyers who need internal retaining rings or larger diameter clips cannot use this part. It suits applications specifying a 7/8 in external E-clip.

Questions about this item

Does the 7/8 in external E-clip generate any noise or heat when installed on a shaft?

No, the steel retaining ring is a passive fastener that produces no noise or heat during operation.

What groove size must the shaft already have for this 7/8 in E-clip to seat correctly?

The shaft needs a standard 7/8 in external groove machined to the clip's specifications for a secure interference fit.

Will the black phosphate finish on this clip react with older zinc-plated hardware on the same assembly?

The phosphate coating is chemically stable and will not cause galvanic corrosion when paired with legacy zinc-plated parts.
