What this capture card does

The Monoprice 144700 Dark Matter is a USB 3.0 video capture device built for streamers and content creators who need to record or broadcast gameplay and other HDMI sources. It accepts an HDMI 2.0 signal at up to 4K 60 Hz and encodes it for the host computer at 4K 30 Hz. A 3.5 mm audio port captures 48 KHz 16-bit sound alongside the video feed.

The spec that decides fit

The critical figure is the 4K 30 Hz maximum capture rate over USB 3.0; the HDMI input can pass 4K 60 Hz through its loop-out, but the recorded or streamed video tops out at 30 frames per second. If your workflow demands 60 fps recording at 4K, this card will not meet that requirement.

How it fits in a build

Connect the source to the HDMI input, run the loop-out to a monitor for zero-latency viewing, and plug the USB 3.0 cable into the PC. The card works with OBS Studio, XSplit and QuickTime Player without proprietary drivers. It draws power from the USB bus, so no external supply is needed, and the slim form factor leaves room in tight workspaces.

Questions about this item

Will the 4K 30 Hz capture rate look smooth when I stream fast-paced gameplay?

The card records at 3840 x 2160 resolution and 30 frames per second, so motion will appear at 30 fps even though the HDMI input accepts 60 Hz.

What does the USB 3.0 connection actually limit when I am recording 4K footage?

USB 3.0 provides enough bandwidth for the 4K 30 Hz video stream and 48 kHz 16-bit audio without compression artefacts.

How much space do I need behind my monitor to fit the capture card and its cables?

The slim chassis adds only a few millimetres of depth; allow room for one HDMI cable in, one HDMI loop-out, a USB 3.0 cable and the 3.5 mm audio jack.
