Optical cable for home audio

This 50-foot Toslink cable carries digital optical audio between TVs, soundbars, receivers and game consoles. The S/PDIF interface transmits uncompressed two-channel PCM or compressed 5.1 and 7.1 surround formats. Optical fibre eliminates ground-loop hum and radio-frequency interference. Molded strain-relief boots protect the connection points.

Full-sized Toslink connectors on both ends

Each end uses a standard square Toslink plug with a gold-plated ferrule and a 5.0 mm outside diameter. The pair of connectors supports the S/PDIF optical protocol used by most consumer audio gear. No adapters or converters are required for typical home-theatre connections.

Suits long runs between fixed components

The 50-foot length reaches across large rooms or through walls without signal degradation. Buyers who need a shorter cable for desktop use or portable devices should look at a different length. Systems that require coaxial S/PDIF or HDMI audio will need a different cable type.

Questions about this item

What audio formats can the 50-foot Toslink cable carry in a real system?

It transmits uncompressed 2-channel PCM and compressed multichannel audio such as DTS or Dolby 5.1 and 7.1 over the optical link.

How does the S/PDIF optical interface limit what the cable can deliver?

The optical S/PDIF connection supports stereo PCM and compressed surround formats up to Dolby 7.1 but cannot carry uncompressed multichannel PCM or high-bitrate codecs.

What physical space does the 5.0 mm cable with molded strain relief need to fit and mount?

The 5.0 mm diameter cable with full-sized Toslink plugs and molded strain-relief boots requires enough clearance for the connector depth and boot radius at each end.
