15.6-inch QHD 165Hz gaming laptop

The MSI Katana 15 pairs a 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13620H 10-core processor with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 8GB GDDR6 GPU. It ships with 64GB DDR5 memory and a 2TB PCIe SSD. The 15.6-inch anti-glare panel runs at 2560 x 1440 resolution, 165Hz refresh and 100% DCI-P3 colour coverage. Windows 11 Home and a Microsoft Office licence are pre-installed.

Cooler Boost 5 thermal system

The Cooler Boost 5 cooling solution manages the 45W CPU and discrete graphics under load. Fan noise rises during extended gaming sessions but remains controlled for typical productivity work. The 45W processor base power draw informs battery life expectations when unplugged. Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3 maintain wireless connectivity without adding significant thermal load.

Four-zone RGB keyboard and HDMI 2.1 output

The chassis measures 14.13 x 0.98 x 10.2 inches and weighs 4.96 pounds in a black finish. A 99-key four-zone RGB keyboard with anti-ghosting supports per-key lighting customisation. Ports include USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-C with DisplayPort 1.4, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A, one USB 2.0 Type-A, HDMI 2.1 supporting 8K at 60Hz or 4K at 120Hz, RJ45 LAN and a combo audio jack. No SD card reader is fitted.

Questions about this item

How is the 2TB PCIe SSD installed, and what step do people get wrong?

The laptop ships with the 2TB PCIe SSD already installed; the step people get wrong is opening the chassis themselves, which voids the engineer-applied upgrade seal and the 1-year warranty on the upgraded storage.

What maintenance or replacement will the Cooler Boost 5 thermal system need later?

The Cooler Boost 5 system uses dual fans and multiple heat pipes; maintenance is limited to clearing dust from the intake and exhaust vents with compressed air every few months to keep the 45W CPU and RTX 4070 GPU temperatures stable.

What limit shows up first under sustained gaming load on the 165Hz QHD panel?

The 45W power limit on the Core i7-13620H is reached first during extended sessions, causing the 10-core CPU to throttle before the RTX 4070 8GB GDDR6 or the 165Hz display become bottlenecks.
