Z390 ATX board for 8th and 9th Gen Intel CPUs

The MSI MPG Z390 GAMING PRO CARBON is an ATX motherboard built on the Intel Z390 chipset. It accepts 8th and 9th Generation Intel Core, Pentium Gold and Celeron processors in the LGA 1151 (300 Series) socket. The platform is not backward compatible with earlier LGA 1151 CPUs. Four 288-pin DDR4 slots support dual-channel memory up to 128 GB.

PCIe 3.0 lanes and shared M.2/SATA bandwidth

The board provides three PCIe 3.0 x16 slots operating in x16/x0/x4 or x8/x8/x4 modes and three PCIe 3.0 x1 slots. Two M.2 Key M slots accept 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110 devices running at PCIe 3.0 x4 or SATA 6Gb/s. Six SATA 6Gb/s ports are also present, but M.2 slots and SATA ports share bandwidth, so populating an M.2 drive can disable one or more SATA connectors.

Check CPU graphics and BIOS for display and Optane

Video output relies on the processor having integrated graphics; the rear panel offers HDMI 1.4 (4096x2160@24Hz) and DisplayPort 1.2 (4096x2304@60Hz). If your CPU lacks an iGPU, you must add a discrete graphics card. For Intel Optane memory, update the BIOS and drivers to the latest MSI versions before installation. The Realtek ALC1220P-VB2 codec delivers 7.1-channel audio with S/PDIF, and the Intel I219-V LAN controller provides 1 Gbps Ethernet.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 2666 MHz DDR4 kit or one of the higher overclocked speeds such as 3200 MHz or 4400 MHz?

The board runs DDR4 at 2666 MHz natively; any kit rated 3000 MHz to 4400 MHz will only reach its rated speed after you enable the matching XMP profile in BIOS.

What resolution can I actually get from the HDMI 1.4 port when I use a 9th Gen Core i7 with integrated graphics?

HDMI 1.4 on this board is limited to 4096x2160 at 24 Hz; for 60 Hz at 4K you need the DisplayPort 1.2 output instead.

If I fill both M.2 slots with PCIe 3.0 x4 SSDs, how many SATA 6Gb/s ports stay usable?

Each occupied M.2 slot disables two SATA ports, so with both M.2 drives installed only two of the six SATA 6Gb/s ports remain active.
