Full-frame 105 mm prime lens with f/1.4 maximum aperture, three ED elements and Nano Crystal Coat for low-light portraits and shallow depth of field
The Nikon AF-S FX NIKKOR 105mm f/1.4E ED is a full-frame prime lens with a maximum aperture of f/1.4. It uses an F-mount and covers the FX format. Three ED elements and Nano Crystal Coat reduce chromatic aberration, ghosting and flare. Internal focusing with manual focus override is built in. The aperture range runs from f/1.4 to f/16 and the maximum reproduction ratio is 0.13x.
Photographers who want the shallowest depth of field at 105mm for portraits or indoor sports will benefit from the f/1.4 aperture. The rounded 9-blade diaphragm produces smooth background defocus. Buyers who need zoom flexibility or a smaller, lighter lens for travel should look elsewhere. This is a specialised prime, not a general-purpose optic.
The defining specification is the f/1.4 maximum aperture at 105mm on FX format. No other full-frame 105mm lens offers this aperture. It dictates low-light capability, depth-of-field control and background rendering. If your work requires that specific combination of focal length and speed, this lens is the only current option. If you can accept f/1.8 or f/2, smaller and less expensive alternatives exist.

Mount the lens on the F-mount by aligning the white dot on the lens barrel with the camera's index mark, then twist until it clicks; the step many forget is setting the camera to AF-S or AF-C so the internal focus motor actually drives.
The lens has no user-serviceable parts; keep the front and rear elements clean with a blower and microfibre cloth, and protect the Nano Crystal Coat by using a filter — if the electromagnetic aperture diaphragm or AF-S motor ever fails, the unit must go to an authorised Nikon service centre.
The shallow depth of field at f/1.4 becomes the practical bottleneck — even slight subject or photographer movement shifts the 0.13× focus plane, so sustained bursts demand precise technique or stopping down.
