Manual 4-Port RJ45 Selector

This passive metal box lets you route a single Ethernet link to one of four RJ45 ports by pressing a button. It works in either direction, so you can share one uplink among four devices or connect one device to four separate networks. No power supply or software is required, making it suited to desks, labs and test benches where a simple, offline switching method is preferred.

Sustained Load Behaviour

Because the selector is a purely mechanical Layer 1 device, it adds no active circuitry, buffering or latency to the link. The active port passes traffic at whatever speed the connected endpoints negotiate up to 1000 Mbps, and the metal housing is rated for 100,000 switch operations. Performance does not degrade over time, and there is no firmware to overheat or throttle under continuous use.

Practical Gigabit Limits

Gigabit throughput relies on using all eight conductors of an 8P8C cable with quality wiring and short runs; longer or lower-grade cables will fall back to 10/100 Mbps. The selector cannot combine or aggregate bandwidth, so only one 1000 Mbps conversation exists at any moment. Jumbo frames up to 9216 bytes pass through when both endpoints support them.

Questions about this item

Does the manual selector generate any noise or heat while it sits on the desk all day?

It has no fan or power supply so it runs silently and produces no measurable heat during continuous use.

What cables or devices must I already own to connect four computers through this box?

You need five standard RJ45 patch cables — one for the shared uplink and one for each of the four device ports — plus the computers or network gear you want to switch between.

Will the 10/100 uplink port limit my older 100 Mbps router when I switch to a Gigabit PC?

The uplink is rated at 10/100 Mbps so the link will negotiate at 100 Mbps even if the selected PC supports 1000 Mbps.
