Compact telephoto zoom for Micro Four Thirds

The M.Zuiko ED 40-150mm f/4-5.6 R covers a 35mm equivalent range of 80-300mm in a silver barrel. It suits Olympus PEN and OM-D owners who want a lightweight, affordable companion to a standard kit lens for portraits and distant scenes. The inner-focus design keeps the lens compact while extending reach from 40mm to 150mm. It is not for photographers who need constant f/2.8 aperture or weather sealing.

MSC autofocus and seven-blade diaphragm

The Movie & Still Compatible mechanism delivers fast, near-silent autofocus for both video and stills. A seven-blade circular aperture produces natural background blurring when stopped down from the maximum f/4-5.6 to a minimum of f/22. The lens construction uses 13 elements in 10 groups, including ED glass, to control aberrations across the zoom range. It does not support MC-14 or MC-20 teleconverters, nor does it engage 5-axis Sync IS.

Simple screw-on mounting and close focus to 0.9m

The lens attaches via the standard Micro Four Thirds bayonet and uses an inner-focus system with a screw-driven motor, so the front element does not rotate during focusing. Minimum focusing distance is 0.9m, giving a maximum magnification of 0.16x on Micro Four Thirds. The absence of external focus-ring extension makes polarising filters easy to use. Build quality is optimised for lightness rather than ruggedisation.

Questions about this item

Will the inner-focus screw drive need lubrication or replacement after extended use?

The lens uses an inner-focus mechanism with a screw drive; Olympus does not publish a service interval for this component.

What optical limit appears first when shooting continuously at 150 mm f/5.6?

Diffraction softening becomes noticeable at the minimum aperture of f/22, well before any mechanical limit.

How much heat or noise does the MSC autofocus generate during all-day video recording?

The Movie & Still Compatible autofocus runs nearly silent and produces negligible heat even during prolonged use.
