Carbide engraving tool with a 60-degree tip and 0.005 inch width for precise marking
The Onsrud 37-01 is a carbide engraving tool ground to a 0.005 inch tip with a 60 degree included angle. It is supplied new and uncoached for clean cuts in a variety of materials. This hand tool suits detail work where a fine point is required.
The tool replaces an engraving tip that has dulled or chipped at the 0.005 inch size. The jump is worth it when the previous cutter no longer holds a sharp edge at this diameter. A 30 degree variant exists for different groove profiles.
Installation consists of placing the shank into a compatible collet or holder and tightening securely. What usually goes wrong is running the tool without confirming the holder runs true, which snaps the fine carbide point immediately.

The tool has a 1/2 in. shank that fits standard 1/2 in. collets or holders used on CNC routers and engraving spindles.
Insert the tool into the collet until the shank seats fully, then tighten the collet nut to the machine maker's torque spec; the step often missed is verifying the tip runs true with a dial indicator before cutting.
Replace the tip when the 0.005 in. point shows visible wear, chipping, or when engraving quality drops, typically after extended use in abrasive materials.
