Slim 9.5 mm SATA Blu-ray Writer

The BU40N is a new internal slimline optical drive that reads and writes Blu-ray, DVD and CD media in a single 9.5 mm high unit. It connects through a standard SATA interface and includes a 4 MB buffer. The tray-loading mechanism accepts 128 mm by 127 mm discs and supports M-Disc archival recording.

For laptop upgrades and M-Disc archiving

This drive suits owners of laptops or small-form-factor PCs that use a 9.5 mm tray-loading SATA bay and want BDXL triple-layer support up to 100 GB. It is not for systems that need a different drive height, a slot-load mechanism or an external USB enclosure. Buyers who require bundled playback or burning software should obtain that separately.

6× BD-R write speed

The maximum Blu-ray Recordable write rate is 6× CAV for single and dual-layer discs, with 6× read for BD-ROM and BD-R. DVD±R and DVD±RW write at 8×, while CD-R and CD-RW reach 24×. These speeds determine how quickly you can create or duplicate discs.

Questions about this item

How fast does the 6x BD-R write speed actually burn a disc in my laptop?

The drive writes BD-R at 6x CAV, so actual burn time varies with the disc and system but will be slower at the start and faster toward the outer edge.

What does the SATA interface limit for this slim drive?

The SATA connection caps transfer at the SATA 1.5 Gbit/s rate, which is sufficient for the 6x BD-R and 8x DVD maximum speeds.

Will the 9.5 mm height and tray load fit my laptop bay?

The drive measures 128 x 127 x 9.5 mm with a tray-load mechanism, matching the standard slim 9.5 mm SATA bay used in compatible laptops.
