48TB Thunderbolt RAID Storage

The OWC ThunderBay 8 is a desktop external enclosure that holds eight 3.5-inch 7200 RPM drives in a single 48TB volume. It connects via Thunderbolt and includes SoftRAID XT for managing RAID 0, 1, 4, 5, 10 or JBOD configurations on macOS and Windows.

Creative professionals needing high-capacity local

This unit suits video editors, photographers and audio engineers who want redundant or striped arrays on a Thunderbolt host. It is not suited for buyers who require a portable bus-powered device, nor for systems that lack a Thunderbolt port or run operating systems outside the listed macOS and Windows versions.

Eight-drive 7200 RPM hardware RAID

The decisive specification is the eight-bay 3.5-inch chassis populated with 7200 RPM drives and hardware RAID support across six levels. That combination determines whether the throughput, redundancy and capacity match a professional media workflow.

Questions about this item

Will the OWC ThunderBay 8 work with my existing Thunderbolt 1 or 2 Mac if I use an adapter?

The unit requires a Thunderbolt 3 connection and macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later; it will not operate on Thunderbolt 1 or 2 even with an adapter.

How can I verify the eight 7200 RPM drives are healthy and the RAID array is running correctly after setup?

Open the included SoftRAID XT application; it shows SMART status for each drive and reports the RAID level as healthy or degraded.

Does the box contain everything needed to start using the 48 TB array, or must I purchase drives or cables separately?

The package includes the eight drives pre-installed, a 0.7 m Thunderbolt cable, a US power cable, two security keys and the SoftRAID XT licence; no extra drives or cables are required.
