Purpose-built rugged laptop

The Panasonic Toughbook CF-31 MK2 is a fully rugged laptop built to MIL-STD-810G, MIL-STD-461F and IP65 standards for operation in extreme environments. It integrates a 13.1-inch sunlight-viewable XGA touchscreen with a 1024 x 768 resolution and includes a digitiser pen for gloved or precise input. A 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 4 GB of DDR3 800 memory in a 2 GB x 2 configuration and a 500 GB hard drive run Windows 10 Pro 32/64 bit.

Build integration

The chassis replaces conventional mounting hardware and protective cases, fitting directly onto legacy docking stations that share the 16-year consistent docking footprint. Integrated 10/100/1000 Mbps LAN, 802.11a/b/g/n WLAN and Bluetooth 4.0 handle wired and wireless connectivity without external dongles. The sealed design eliminates the need for rugged sleeves or port covers, while the included AC adapter powers the unit from standard mains supply.

Suitability

Field engineers, emergency responders and military personnel who require a certified drop-shock and vibration-resistant platform with pen-enabled touchscreen will match this specification. Buyers who need solid-state storage, more than 4 GB of memory or a higher-resolution display for detailed GIS or CAD work should look at other configurations. The single-core processor architecture also limits suitability for heavily multi-threaded workloads.

Questions about this item

How does the 500 GB hard drive handle constant read-write cycles?

The mechanical 500 GB HDD is the first bottleneck under sustained load; its spinning platters limit throughput and can slow the system during heavy I/O.

What noise or heat should I expect from the CF-31 MK2 during all-day operation?

The single-core 2.5 GHz Core i5 and DDR3 800 memory run cool enough for the fan to stay quiet in normal use; sustained heavy tasks will spin the fan up and warm the magnesium chassis.

Do I need a docking station or port replicator to use this Toughbook CF-31?

No extra hardware is required — the unit ships with its power adapter and digitiser pen, and built-in Gigabit LAN, 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 provide full connectivity out of the box.
