Open-back sound and comfort

The Philips SHP96 wireless over-ear headphones use an open acoustic system with 50 mm drivers to produce spacious audio. Crisp bass, balanced midrange and pristine high frequencies serve music, movies and gaming. A steel-reinforced headband and double-layered cushion combine durability with long-session comfort. Breathable ear-cup cushions complete the fit.

Sustained listening character

The open-back design prevents pressure build-up during extended use, so the soundstage remains airy rather than congested. Large drivers maintain control across the frequency range without compression artefacts that can appear in closed designs after long periods. Wireless Bluetooth connectivity keeps the signal stable for continuous playback. The acoustic signature stays consistent from the first track to the last.

Thermals, noise and power in use

Open ear cups allow natural airflow, so heat does not accumulate around the ears during normal sessions. Passive isolation is limited by design, meaning ambient sound enters and your audio leaks out. The headphones draw power only from their internal battery for Bluetooth operation. No active cooling or external power adapter is involved.

Questions about this item

How much heat or battery drain should I expect from the 50 mm drivers during all-day listening?

The open-back design lets air circulate around the 50 mm drivers, so the ear cups stay cool and the headphones draw only the modest power needed for Bluetooth streaming.

Which Bluetooth source device do I already need to pair with the SHP96?

Any smartphone, tablet or computer that supports standard Bluetooth audio will connect instantly; no proprietary dongle or app is required.

Will the open acoustic system leak sound into my older wired headphone amp if I plug the SHP96 into its line-out?

The SHP96 is a wireless-only model with no wired input, so it cannot be connected to a headphone amp; sound leakage only occurs from the ear cups into the room.
