Purpose and fit

The PLANET ELA-100 is a passive surge-protection box that sits between two 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps Ethernet links and a single ground point. It is built for installers who need to shield PoE cameras, switches or wireless access points from lightning-induced transients on outdoor or building-to-building runs.

Upgrade path

The unit replaces an unprotected patch cable or basic coupler wherever a copper Ethernet cable enters a building from outside. The step up is justified when the cable route is exposed to direct or nearby lightning strikes and the connected equipment has no internal surge rating.

Sustained behaviour

The gas-discharge tube clamps at a DC spark-over voltage of 230V and can divert a nominal impulse discharge current of 20 KA with an 8 by 20 microsecond waveform. Once the arc forms the voltage across the device drops to roughly 35V at 1A and the glow-to-arc transition occurs near 1A, letting the box absorb repeated hits without degradation while operating from 0 to 50 degrees C.
