12-bay rackmount NAS for multi-user environments

The Qnap TS-1273AU-RP-8G-US is a 2U rackmount network-attached storage system with twelve SATA drive bays. It runs on an AMD Ryzen V1500B four-core eight-thread processor at 2.2 GHz with 8 GB of DDR4 memory installed. Dual redundant 300 W power supplies and two 2.5 GbE RJ-45 ports support continuous operation in demanding settings.

Limits of the 2.5 GbE and PCIe 3.0 interfaces

Network throughput caps at 2.5 GbE per port unless a 10 GbE card is added through one of two PCIe 3.0 x4 slots. Memory expands to 64 GB across two DDR4 DIMM slots. Drive bays accept 3.5-inch SATA hard disks or 2.5-inch SATA solid-state drives, with a raw capacity ceiling of 264 TB. M.2 NVMe caching requires a compatible PCIe add-in card.

Replaces single-PSU or single-NIC 12-bay units

The redundant power supply and second 2.5 GbE link remove single points of failure found in entry-level 12-bay models. Builders needing 10 GbE, M.2 NVMe tiers or more than 64 GB of RAM must add expansion cards or choose a different platform. Buyers who need more than twelve drive bays or fibre-channel connectivity cannot meet those needs with this chassis.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 8 GB model or plan to upgrade to 64 GB?

The unit ships with 8 GB DDR4 in two slots and supports up to 64 GB total, so start with 8 GB and add matching DDR4 DIMMs later if workloads demand it.

What does the 2.2 GHz Ryzen V1500B actually deliver in this NAS?

The 4-core 8-thread processor runs at 2.2 GHz and handles multi-user file serving, virtualization and transcoding workloads within the 78.92 W typical operating envelope.

How fast are the two 2.5 GbE ports in practice?

Each RJ-45 port caps at 2.5 Gbps, giving up to 5 Gbps aggregate throughput when both links are active and the network infrastructure supports it.
