Four-bay desktop NAS with 10GbE SFP+

The Qnap TS-431KX-2G-US is a diskless desktop network-attached storage device that holds four SATA drives and runs QTS 4.4.2 on an Annapurna Labs processor with 2GB DDR3 installed. It provides two Gigabit RJ-45 ports, one 10GbE SFP+ port and three USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports for external storage or backup targets. Maximum raw capacity reaches 88TB with compatible 3.5-inch hard drives or 2.5-inch SSDs.

Who this suits and who it does not

This NAS suits small offices or advanced home users who need 10GbE uplink capability and hardware RAID performance in a compact diskless chassis. It is not for buyers who require out-of-the-box storage, ECC memory support, or more than eight gigabytes of total system memory.

The specification that decides fit

The single 10GbE SFP+ port is the deciding factor; the unit only reaches ten-gigabit speeds when a compatible SFP+ transceiver and switch are available, otherwise it operates at gigabit over the two RJ-45 ports.

Questions about this item

How do I confirm the Annapurna Labs processor and QTS 4.4.2 are running correctly after initial setup?

Log into the QTS web interface; the dashboard shows processor model, 2GB DDR3 memory and firmware version. Drive LEDs for each of the four bays and the LAN indicators should display steady green when drives and network links are active.

What ships with the TS-431KX-2G-US and what must I purchase separately?

The box contains the NAS unit, two Ethernet cables, a 90 W power adapter and a power cord. Four 3.5″ SATA HDDs or 2.5″ SATA SSDs and any DDR3 SODIMM upgrade up to 8 GB are sold separately.

Should I choose the 2 GB model or add a DDR3 SODIMM to reach 8 GB for RAID workloads?

The installed 2 GB DDR3 handles typical file sharing and backup. For heavier RAID workloads or multiple concurrent services, adding a compatible DDR3 SODIMM to the single slot for up to 8 GB total improves responsiveness.
