Versatile 4-Bay Desktop NAS

The Synology DS423 is a four-bay desktop network-attached storage system built around a Realtek RTD1619B processor and 2 GB of DDR4 memory. It provides two 1GbE ports and two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports for connectivity. The unit accepts up to four 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA drives to create a private cloud hub for file backup, media streaming, and surveillance footage storage. It supports up to 30 IP cameras for versatile video monitoring.

Upgrade from single-drive or two-bay units

Moving from a single external drive or a two-bay NAS adds the ability to run RAID configurations for data redundancy while expanding raw capacity to 72 TB. The jump is worth it when you need to protect against drive failure without sacrificing all usable space, or when your media library and backup sets have outgrown a smaller enclosure. The dual LAN ports also enable link aggregation for higher throughput than a single gigabit connection can provide.

Sustained operation with low noise and power

Under continuous access the DS423 draws 32.41 W and runs at a quiet 22.9 dB, making it suitable for always-on deployment in a home office or shared workspace. When drives enter hibernation, power consumption drops to 4.97 W. The operating temperature range spans 0 °C to 40 °C, and the Btrfs file system helps maintain data integrity during long-running workloads such as incremental backups or surveillance recording.

Questions about this item

What drive sizes and interface does the 4-bay DS423 accept?

The DS423 has four SATA bays that each take a 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch SATA HDD or SSD, up to a total of 72 TB.

How do I install drives in the DS423 and what step is often missed?

Slide each drive into a bay until the SATA connector seats, secure it with the supplied screws, then create a storage pool and volume in DSM before storing data.

Which components in the DS423 may need replacement over time?

The installed 2 GB DDR4 memory is soldered and not user-replaceable; the cooling fan and power adapter are the only field-replaceable parts.
