Rycote WJ 8J Windjammer for 295/220mm Windshield

Windjammer for 295 and 220 mm windshields

The Rycote WJ 8J Windjammer is a synthetic fur cover built for field recordists and broadcast professionals who need maximum wind-noise protection. It fits windshields measuring 295 mm or 220 mm and delivers up to 50 dB of attenuation. First introduced in 1987, it preserves high-frequency clarity while shielding capsules in extreme conditions. The drawstring and toggle ensure a secure, snug fit during active use.

Check windshield length and pile condition

Verify that your windshield length matches either 295 mm or 220 mm before ordering, as each WJ 8J is cut to one specific size. Inspect the synthetic fur pile for matting or debris, since a clean, upright pile is essential for maintaining the rated attenuation. The supplied fold-flat hairbrush is intended for regular grooming to keep performance consistent. Confirm the drawstring toggle operates freely so the cover seats tightly without gaps.

Adds wind protection without electronic change

Slip the windjammer over the compatible windshield to gain up to 50 dB of wind-noise reduction without altering the microphone’s signal chain. The lightweight fur layer adds minimal bulk, leaving the existing boom or mount balance unchanged. Routine brushing with the included tool maintains the pile, preserving high-frequency transparency over time. This accessory suits outdoor production kits where wind is the primary noise source.
