640GB 2.5" SATA notebook drive

The Samsung Spinpoint M7E HM641JI is a 640GB 2.5-inch internal hard drive built for laptop storage upgrades. It spins at 5400 RPM with an 8MB cache and connects through a SATA 3.0Gb/s interface. The bare-drive package fits standard 9.5mm drive bays.

Suits capacity-focused laptop repairs

This drive fits owners replacing a failed 2.5-inch SATA drive in an older notebook or external enclosure where mechanical height is not restricted. Buyers needing faster access times, solid-state reliability or a thinner 7mm profile for ultraportable chassis should consider a different technology.

SATA 3.0Gb/s interface

The drive communicates over SATA 3.0Gb/s, so the host system must provide a matching SATA data and power connection. Systems with only legacy IDE or proprietary connectors cannot accept this drive without an adapter that is not included.

Questions about this item

Will the 9.5 mm height fit my laptop bay?

The drive measures 9.5 mm tall, 69.75 mm wide and 100.3 mm long, matching the standard 2.5 inch SATA notebook form factor.

Do I need any adapter or bracket for the SATA 3.0Gb/s connection?

No adapter is required; the drive plugs directly into a standard 2.5 inch SATA data and power connector inside the laptop.

How often should I expect to replace a 5400 RPM mechanical drive like this?

Mechanical drives typically last several years; monitor SMART health data and keep backups, as there is no fixed replacement interval.
