A silver 2.5 inch enterprise SSD with a label showing Samsung PM9D3a MZWL6960HFJA-00AW7 960 GB

SAMSUNG

SAMSUNG PM9D3a MZWL6960HFJA-00AW7 960 GB 2.5 inch PCIe 5.0 x4 enterprise SSD

SKU CH-5DWM-KTQZJ

A 960 GB PCIe 5.0 x4 enterprise NVMe SSD delivering 12000 MB/s reads and 1600 MB/s writes for server workloads

  • 960 GB capacity supports data-intensive server workloads
  • PCIe 5.0 x4 interface delivers 12000 MB/s sequential read throughput
  • 1000000 IOPS read performance accelerates random access tasks
  • 1600 MB/s sequential write speed handles sustained ingest
  • NVMe protocol reduces latency for enterprise applications

960 GB PCIe 5.0 enterprise SSD

The Samsung PM9D3a is a 960 GB NVMe drive in a 2.5 inch form factor built for server deployment. It connects over a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface and is sold new for datacentre workloads.

Sustained performance under load

Sequential read throughput reaches 12000 MB/s with 1000000 IOPS while write throughput is 1600 MB/s at 70000 IOPS. The PCIe 5.0 x4 link maintains bandwidth during extended I/O rather than throttling after a short burst.

Upgrade path and fit

This drive replaces earlier PCIe 4.0 or 3.0 enterprise SSDs when a server platform supports PCIe 5.0 x4 and needs the higher read IOPS. It is not suited for systems limited to PCIe 4.0 or for workloads that require greater write endurance than 70000 IOPS.

Questions about this item

How much power does the 960 GB PM9D3a draw under continuous PCIe 5.0 x4 load?

Samsung does not publish an active power figure for the PM9D3a; the drive is designed for server environments with adequate airflow.

Does the 2.5 inch PM9D3a need a U.2 backplane or can it plug straight into a standard PCIe slot?

The drive uses a U.2 connector, so it requires a U.2 backplane or a U.2-to-PCIe adapter to connect to a standard PCIe slot.

Will the PM9D3a negotiate down to PCIe 4.0 if installed in an older server that only supports PCIe 4.0?

Yes, the NVMe interface negotiates link width and speed, so the drive will operate at PCIe 4.0 x4 on a PCIe 4.0 platform.
