Enterprise cloud storage drive

The Seagate Constellation CS ST1000NC001 is a 1TB 3.5-inch hard drive built for 24x7 cloud data center replicated environments. Its 7200 RPM spindle and 64MB cache deliver steady throughput for cloud storage servers, arrays and backup appliances. The bare drive format suits system integrators deploying high-density racks.

SATA 6.0Gb/s interface limits

The SATA 6.0Gb/s interface caps burst transfer at the bus ceiling, so sustained rates sit well below the theoretical maximum. Average seek time of 9.5ms and average write time of 10.5ms reflect mechanical latency that no interface upgrade can remove. The drive draws under 8 watts, keeping power and cooling costs low in large deployments.

Upgrade from lower-capacity enterprise drives

Replacing smaller 7200 RPM enterprise drives with this 1TB model consolidates bays and cuts per-terabyte operating expense. The jump is worth it when replication schemes demand affordable capacity and high vibration tolerance in the same chassis. Seagate Instant Secure Erase simplifies repurposing or disposal at end of life.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 1TB model or a different capacity for my NAS?

This model provides 1TB of storage; if you need more space you would select a higher-capacity drive from the same Constellation CS series.

How does the 7200 RPM speed affect real-world performance in a server?

The 7200 RPM spindle delivers a 9.5 ms average seek time and 10.5 ms average write time for consistent throughput in 24x7 workloads.

What does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface limit in practice?

The SATA 6.0Gb/s link caps burst transfer at 6.0 Gb/s; sustained rates are governed by the 7200 RPM platters and 64MB cache.
