Momentus 7200.1 80GB IDE Laptop Drive

This Seagate Momentus 7200.1 is an 80GB internal hard drive built for 2.5 inch laptop bays. It spins at 7200 RPM with an 8MB cache and connects through an IDE Ultra ATA100 interface. The bare drive arrives new and is suited to older notebooks that still use a parallel ATA connection.

Suits legacy notebooks needing parallel ATA

The drive fits laptops designed for IDE Ultra ATA100 or ATA-6 and a 2.5 inch form factor. It is not for machines that only accept serial ATA or newer interfaces, nor for users who need more than 80GB of capacity. Buyers wanting a solid-state upgrade or a larger mechanical disk should look elsewhere.

7200 RPM spindle speed defines performance

At 7200 RPM the drive delivers an average seek time of 10.5ms, average write time of 12.5ms and average latency of 4.2ms. That rotational speed is the single specification that decides whether this part meets the performance target for a legacy laptop refresh.

Questions about this item

What interface must my laptop already have for the ST980825A to connect?

The drive uses an IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6 interface, so the notebook must provide a matching 44-pin IDE connector.

Will the 7200 RPM speed and 10.5 ms seek time cause issues if I keep an older, slower drive as a secondary device?

The Momentus 7200.1 runs at 7200 RPM with a 10.5 ms average seek time; it will operate independently on its own IDE channel, so an older drive on the same or another channel will not affect its performance.

How can I verify the 80 GB drive is healthy and performing at its rated 12.5 ms average write time after installation?

Run the drive's built-in S.M.A.R.T. self-test and check the reported attributes; a passing result and normal attribute values confirm the 80 GB unit is functioning within its 12.5 ms average write specification.
