Hybrid drive for laptop upgrades

The Seagate Momentus XT ST500LX003 is a 2.5 inch hybrid drive that combines a 500GB mechanical platter spinning at 7200 RPM with a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and 32MB cache. It fits laptops and other devices that accept a 9.7mm high SATA drive and need more capacity than a small solid-state drive can economically provide.

Sustained throughput relies on the mechanical

Under continuous load the drive performs at the speed of its 7200 RPM platters once the hybrid algorithm has moved the most-used data out of the flash cache. Write-heavy workloads that exceed the cache size will see performance settle to the underlying rotational media rather than maintaining flash-like burst rates.

Standard SATA installation with used-drive caveats

The bare drive drops into any 2.5 inch SATA bay and requires no special drivers, but the units are used and may show up to 25 bad sectors or cosmetic markings. They have been erased to DoD 5220.22 M standard and tested functional, yet they arrive unformatted and unpartitioned so the operating system must prepare the volume before use.

Questions about this item

How much heat does the 7200 RPM Momentus XT generate during continuous use?

The 7200 RPM spindle speed produces more heat than slower laptop drives; ensure your chassis has adequate airflow around the 9.7 mm tall 2.5" form factor.

What laptop slot and cable does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface need?

It fits any standard 2.5" SATA drive bay and connects with a regular SATA data and power cable; no adapter or special bracket is required.

Will this hybrid drive work in a laptop that only supports SATA 3.0Gb/s?

Yes, the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface is backward compatible and will run at the slower 3.0Gb/s link speed without any configuration.
