12 TB SAS Hard Drive for Enterprise Storage

The Seagate Exos ST12000NM0027 is a 12 TB helium-filled hard drive built for enterprise storage systems. It uses a SAS 12Gb/s interface and spins at 7200 RPM with a 256 MB buffer. The 3.5-inch form factor supports hot-plug installation in compatible bays.

Suits High-Capacity Arrays Not Single-Drive Backups

This drive suits administrators building high-capacity RAID or JBOD arrays who need dual-port SAS connectivity and helium-sealed reliability. Buyers who need a single drive for desktop backups or external enclosures without a SAS controller should look at something else.

SAS 12Gb/s Interface Determines Compatibility

The single specification that decides fit is the SAS 12Gb/s interface; the system backplane or controller must support this standard. Without a compatible SAS HBA, RAID card or storage chassis the drive cannot be used.

Questions about this item

How do I install the 3.5" SAS drive in a hot-plug storage system and what step is often missed?

Slide the drive into the hot-plug bay until the SAS connector seats firmly; the step often missed is securing the retention latch or screw so vibration cannot unseat the 12Gb/s link.

What maintenance or replacement will the 12 TB helium drive need later?

The sealed helium design has no user-serviceable parts; plan replacement when SMART attributes report reallocated sectors or the 256 MB buffer logs consistent write errors.

What limit appears first on the 7200 RPM drive during sustained writes?

The 12Gb/s SAS interface and 256 MB buffer sustain bursts, but the 7200 RPM mechanical throughput becomes the bottleneck during long sequential writes.
