Server storage drive

The Seagate Cheetah 15K.5 ST3300655SS is a 300 GB 3.5 inch internal hard drive spinning at 15000 RPM. It connects through a SAS 3 Gb/s interface and includes a 16 MB buffer. The unit ships as a bare drive only.

Enterprise workloads

This drive suits servers and storage arrays that need high spindle speed and a SAS connection. It is not for systems that lack a SAS host bus adapter or that require a larger capacity than 300 GB. Desktop boards without SAS support cannot use it.

15000 RPM spindle speed

The 15000 RPM rotation rate is the specification that determines whether this drive meets the performance target. Buyers needing slower nearline speeds or solid-state latency should consider other device types.

Questions about this item

How much usable space will the 300 GB drive show in the operating system?

The drive is labelled 300 GB; the OS will report a lower figure because it counts in binary units.

What does the 3 Gb/s SAS interface limit in real use?

The 3 Gb/s SAS link caps the maximum transfer rate to roughly 300 MB/s.

Will this 3.5 inch SAS drive fit a standard desktop drive bay?

It uses the 3.5 inch form factor and needs a SAS backplane or controller with compatible power and data connectors.
