Capacity and form factor

The Seagate BarraCuda ST5000LM000 is a 5TB laptop internal hard drive with a 2.5-inch form factor and a 15mm z-height. It connects via a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and includes a 128MB cache spinning at 5400 RPM. This bare drive is built for daily computing workloads in compatible notebooks and all-in-one systems.

Suitable uses and limits

The drive fits laptops and all-in-one desktops that accept a 15mm 2.5-inch SATA bay and need high capacity for media libraries or backups. It is not suited for ultra-thin laptops limited to a 7mm drive bay. Buyers who require the faster access times of solid-state storage should look at a different technology.

Deciding specification

The 15mm physical height is the critical measurement that determines whether this drive fits the target system. Verify the drive bay clearance before purchase because many thin-and-light laptops only accommodate 7mm drives.

Questions about this item

How much heat and vibration does the 15mm BarraCuda add to a laptop running all day?

The 15mm z-height helps reduce system heat generation and vibration while delivering up to 140MB/s data rates during continuous operation.

My laptop only has a standard SATA 6.0Gb/s port and a 15mm drive bay — is anything else required to install this 5TB drive?

No extra parts are needed; the bare drive connects directly to a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and fits a 2.5-inch 15mm bay using the laptop's existing mounting hardware.

Will the low startup current of this 5400 RPM drive work reliably in an older USB-2 external enclosure I already own?

Yes, low startup current configurations for 3TB to 5TB drives enable use in legacy low-current systems like USB-2 external boxes.
