  • 6 TB capacity stores large datasets

  • 5-inch form factor fits standard enterprise bays
  • Hot-swap design allows drive replacement without downtime

6 TB Enterprise SAS Drive

This 6 TB Seagate drive spins at 7200 RPM and connects through a 12 G SAS interface in a 3.5 inch form factor. It is built for nearline hot-swap environments and carries a Dell enterprise part number. The unit is supplied new and intended for server or storage-array installations.

Who should use this and who should not

It suits administrators expanding capacity in SAS-based arrays that support hot-swap trays. It will not fit systems that lack a SAS backplane or the physical space for a 3.5 inch enterprise drive. Buyers needing a different interface or a smaller form factor should look elsewhere.

Deciding specification — 12 G SAS interface

The 12 G SAS connection is the single detail that determines compatibility; the host must provide a matching SAS controller and backplane. Without that link the drive cannot communicate or receive power in a hot-swap tray. Verify the controller and chassis specifications before ordering.

Questions about this item

Does my system need a 12G SAS controller and a 3.5in hot-swap bay to use this drive?

Yes, the ST6000NM0034 requires a 12G SAS host bus adapter or RAID controller and a standard 3.5in hot-swap drive bay with SAS backplane power and data connections.

Can I run this 7200 RPM SAS drive on the same backplane as older 6G SAS drives?

The drive negotiates down to 6G speeds automatically, so it will operate alongside 6G SAS drives on the same backplane, though each drive runs at its own negotiated link rate.

How do I confirm the drive is recognised at 12G after installation?

Check the controller BIOS or management utility — it should list the ST6000NM0034 with a 12Gbps link speed and show the full 6TB capacity.
