Enterprise laptop drive

The Seagate ST91000640SS is a 1TB 2.5 inch SAS hard drive spinning at 7200 RPM with 64MB cache. It belongs to the Constellation.2 series and is built for server environments where high capacity density matters.

Server builders versus desktop users

This drive suits administrators expanding storage arrays in rackmount or blade servers that accept SAS 6Gb/s connections. Buyers who need a drive for a desktop PC or consumer laptop should look elsewhere because the SAS interface is not supported on those platforms.

SAS 6Gb/s interface requirement

The single specification that decides compatibility is the SAS 6Gb/s interface; the system must provide a matching SAS controller and backplane. Without that connection the drive will not function regardless of its 15mm height or 1.4M hour MTBF rating.
