Seagate Momentus 5400.6 500GB SATA drive

This Seagate Momentus 5400.6 ST9500325AS is a 2.5-inch internal laptop hard drive with a 500GB capacity. It spins at 5400 RPM and connects via a SATA 3.0Gb/s interface with 8MB of cache. The drive measures 9.5mm in height and fits standard notebook bays.

Suits storage upgrades on older laptops.

The drive works well for users replacing a failed drive in a legacy notebook or adding bulk storage for documents and media. Its 5400 RPM speed and SATA 3.0Gb/s link limit throughput, so it is not suitable for anyone wanting fast boot times or snappy application loading.

500GB capacity with mechanical limits

The 500GB capacity holds a large collection of movies, music, applications and documents. Performance runs out during heavy random I/O or when the operating system demands low latency, as the 5400 RPM spindle and 8MB cache cannot sustain high transfer rates.

Questions about this item

Does my laptop need a 2.5-inch drive bay that accepts a 9.5mm height drive for the ST9500325AS?

Yes, the drive is a 2.5-inch form factor with a maximum height of 9.5mm, so your laptop bay must accommodate those dimensions.

Will the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface on this Momentus 5400.6 work with an older laptop that only supports SATA 1.5Gb/s?

The SATA 3.0Gb/s interface is backward compatible and will operate at the slower 1.5Gb/s speed on older controllers.

How can I verify the 500GB capacity and 5400 RPM speed are recognised correctly after installation?

Check the drive properties in your operating system or BIOS; they should report 500GB capacity and 5400 RPM for the ST9500325AS.
