Capacity and interface

This is a new Seagate Momentus 5400 laptop internal hard drive with 640GB capacity and a SATA 3.0Gb/s interface. The 2.5 inch form factor fits standard notebook bays and the bare-drive packaging means no cables or brackets are included.

Suitable upgrades and limits

The drive suits owners of older laptops that accept a 5400 RPM SATA drive and want more space for documents, music or video files. Buyers who require a solid-state drive or a higher spindle speed should consider other options.

Deciding specification

The single specification that decides fit is the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface combined with the 2.5 inch form factor; the host system must provide a matching SATA data and power connection.

Questions about this item

What practical throughput does the SATA 3.0Gb/s interface cap at?

The SATA 3.0Gb/s interface caps at a theoretical 3.0 Gb/s internal data rate, with actual throughput limited by the 5400 RPM spindle and 8MB cache.

What physical space and mounting does the 2.5" form factor need?

The 2.5" form factor fits standard laptop drive bays and caddies using the industry-standard SATA connector and mounting holes.

How is the drive installed, and what step is often missed?

Connect the SATA data and power cables, secure the drive in the bay, then initialise and format the 640GB volume in the operating system before use.
