Capacity and interface

This Seagate ST980811AS-RK is a new 80 GB laptop internal hard drive with a 2.5 inch form factor. It connects through a SATA 1.5 Gb/s interface and spins at 5400 RPM with an 8 MB cache. The drive uses perpendicular recording technology for data density.

Suitability and limits

It suits owners of older laptops that require a SATA 1.5 Gb/s 2.5 inch drive for replacement or modest capacity upgrades. Buyers needing higher capacities or faster interfaces such as SATA 3 Gb/s or 6 Gb/s should look at other drives. Systems that only accept 1.8 inch drives or proprietary connectors cannot use this model.

Deciding specification

The SATA 1.5 Gb/s interface is the single specification that decides compatibility. Verify that the laptop's drive bay and controller support this exact interface and the 2.5 inch form factor before purchase.

Questions about this item

Will the ST980811AS-RK work in a laptop that only supports SATA 1.5Gb/s?

Yes, the drive uses the SATA 1.5Gb/s interface so it matches that laptop's native speed without any adapter.

How can I verify the ST980811AS-RK is performing correctly after installation?

Check that the drive spins at 5400 RPM, reports 80GB capacity and shows an average seek time near 11ms in your diagnostic tool.

Does the retail box of the ST980811AS-RK include mounting screws or a SATA cable?

The drive is packaged retail; screws and cables are not included and must be sourced from your laptop chassis.
