What the HD 800 S delivers

The Sennheiser HD 800 S is an open-back stereo headphone built for studio referencing between monitors and cans. Its 56mm transducer sits in a stainless-steel housing with an aerospace-grade headband that keeps weight down to 11.6 oz. The design targets engineers who need every frequency nuance audible during critical listening sessions.

Proprietary absorber technology

Sennheiser's sound absorber reduces the masking effect that hides bright signals when louder low-frequency material plays at the same time. This preserves the integrity of the highest high ends so the full spectrum remains clear and detailed. The result is a more transparent reference tool for mixing and mastering decisions.

Fit and setup notes

The lightweight construction and adjustable headband make extended sessions comfortable, while the open-back architecture requires a quiet room to prevent sound leakage. No software or drivers are needed — just connect to a suitable headphone amplifier. Buyers who need isolation for tracking or portable use should consider closed-back alternatives.

Questions about this item

Are the 56 mm transducers user-replaceable if they wear out?

The 56 mm drivers are built into the stainless-steel housings and are not designed for user replacement; service would require the manufacturer or an authorised centre.

What limits listening time during a long studio session?

The open-back design leaks sound both ways, so room noise and bleed become the practical limit before the headphones themselves fatigue.

How much heat builds up on the ear cups after hours of use?

Open-back construction lets air circulate freely, so the cups stay close to room temperature even during all-day reference work.
