Through-beam photoelectric sensor detects objects up to 20 m with infrared LED, NPN output, IP67 metal housing, and M12 connector
The Sick VS/VE18-4N3240 is a cylindrical through-beam photoelectric sensor with an M18 x 1 threaded housing. It uses an infrared LED source to detect objects across a sensing range of 0 m to 20 m, with a defined operating range up to 14 m. The unit supplies an NPN switching output selectable for light or dark switching via a control cable. It suits automation engineers integrating presence detection into conveyor or packaging lines.
The sensor draws 30 mA from a 10 V DC to 30 V DC supply with ripple limited to 10 %. Its switching frequency reaches 250 Hz and response time is 2 ms, allowing continuous high-speed counting or sorting tasks. The metal nickel-plated brass housing carries an IP67 enclosure rating and operates from –25 °C to +70 °C. A potentiometer provides 270° sensitivity adjustment for stable long-term calibration.
Verify that your control system accepts an NPN output with a maximum load of 100 mA. Confirm the 10 V DC to 30 V DC supply rail can deliver the required current with ripple below 10 %. Ensure an M12 4-pin male connector matches your cabling and that the 78 mm housing length fits the available mounting space. The sensor carries UL file NMFT2.E175606 for compliance reference.

The sensor draws a maximum of 30 mA from a 10 V DC to 30 V DC supply, so at 24 V the power dissipation is well under one watt and the housing stays cool in a 25 °C ambient.
You need a 10 V DC to 30 V DC power supply and a female M12 4-pin connector to match the sensor's male plug.
Yes, the cylindrical metal housing uses the standard M18 x 1 thread and 78 mm length, so it fits the same mounting holes as other VS/VE18 models.
