Cylindrical M18 photoelectric sensor

The Sick VTE18-4N8740 is a new cylindrical photoelectric proximity sensor that uses an energetic detection principle. Its M18 × 1 thread and 78 mm housing length suit standard mounting points in industrial equipment. An axial infrared LED emits a 2.8° beam that produces a 40 mm spot at 800 mm. The NPN output supports selectable light or dark switching via the L/D control cable.

Wiring and mounting requirements

A 10–30 V DC supply with ripple below 10 % powers the unit, drawing 30 mA. The 4-pin M12 male connector carries the NPN switching signal rated at 100 mA and 250 Hz. IP67 enclosure rating and a –25 °C to +70 °C operating range allow installation in wet or temperature-variable zones. Plastic PBT/PC housing and PMMA optics resist typical industrial contaminants.

Replaces older proximity switches

The sensor upgrades mechanical limit switches or earlier photoelectric units that lack adjustable range or selectable switching mode. The 270° potentiometer lets you set the sensing window between 10 mm and 700 mm without changing hardware.
