The f/1.8 APS-C zoom

The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens is the first zoom for APS-C E-mount cameras with a constant f/1.8 aperture from 17mm to 40mm. It gives photographers and videographers bright, shallow depth-of-field performance across a versatile wide-to-normal range. The bundle adds a filter kit, cleaning supplies and a tabletop tripod for immediate use.

APS-C coverage and internal zoom

Designed exclusively for APS-C sensors, the lens cannot cover a full-frame image circle without vignetting. Its internal zoom mechanism keeps the barrel length constant, which helps balance on gimbals, but the fixed f/1.8 aperture means the entrance pupil grows at longer focal lengths. Buyers needing full-frame coverage or a lighter variable-aperture zoom should look elsewhere.

Constant f/1.8 aperture

The defining specification is the constant f/1.8 maximum aperture throughout the 17-40mm zoom range. It delivers the same exposure and depth-of-field control at 40mm as at 17mm, a combination no other APS-C zoom currently offers. If your work demands that consistent speed across the range, this is the lens that provides it.

Questions about this item

Should I choose this 17-40mm f/1.8 zoom or a prime lens for low light?

This zoom maintains f/1.8 from 17 to 40mm, replacing several primes while keeping the same wide aperture for low-light shooting.

What does the constant f/1.8 aperture mean when I am shooting indoors?

You can zoom from 17mm to 40mm without losing light, so exposure stays consistent and depth of field remains shallow across the whole range.

Which Sony E-mount cameras can use this APS-C lens?

It covers the APS-C image circle on Sony E-mount bodies; on full-frame models the camera will automatically crop to APS-C mode.
