Limits of the USB 4.0 interface

The cable reaches its rated 40 Gbps and 240 W only when both host and device support USB 4.0 or Thunderbolt 4/3 with PD 3.1 EPR. Older USB-C ports fall back to 2.0, 3.0, 3.1 or 3.2 speeds and to 60 W or 100 W charging. Video output requires the source port to implement DisplayPort Alternate Mode; without it no picture appears.

The spec that decides fit

Maximum power delivery is 240 W at 48 V, with intermediate steps at 36 V / 180 W and 28 V / 140 W. If the charger or device tops out at 100 W the cable will still work but cannot deliver its peak rate. Buyers whose gear only accepts 60 W or 100 W will not see the faster charging this cable enables.
