Compact full-frame mirrorless camera

The Sony a7C II is a compact mirrorless camera built around a 33.0MP full-frame Exmor R CMOS sensor and the BIONZ XR processor. It captures stills at up to 10 fps with full autofocus and auto-exposure tracking. Video recording supports 10-bit 4:2:2 4K at up to 30p using XAVC S-I format. The body-only design suits photographers and content creators who want full-frame quality in a small, everyday form factor.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

This camera fits hybrid shooters who need high-resolution stills, reliable 4K30p video, and strong low-light performance from ISO 100-51200 expandable to 50-204800. The 759-point phase-detection system covering 94% of the frame and 7 stops of in-body stabilization help in varied conditions. Buyers who need faster continuous shooting, higher video frame rates, or a larger electronic viewfinder should consider whether this specific combination meets their workflow.

Deciding specification: 33MP sensor

The 33.0MP back-illuminated full-frame sensor paired with 10-bit 4K recording at 30p defines the camera's core capability. It delivers the resolution for detailed crops and the colour depth for grading flexibility, while the 2.36m-dot OLED viewfinder provides a clear eye-level preview. If your work demands 4K at higher frame rates or a higher-resolution finder, this specification marks the limit of what this body provides.

Questions about this item

Will the mechanical shutter need replacement after heavy use?

The body offers 10 fps continuous shooting with either mechanical or electronic shutter, so you can rely on the electronic shutter to reduce mechanical wear.

What limits 4K video recording length during long sessions?

10-bit 4K 30p recording continues until the memory card fills or the battery runs out, with no clip-time limit mentioned in the specifications.

How hot or noisy does the camera get when shooting all day?

The compact full-frame design uses passive cooling; extended 4K 30p or 10 fps bursts will raise body temperature, but no fan noise is present.
