5.25" IDE DVD-ROM Drive 16X 48X

The Sony DDU1615 is a new 5.25 inch internal DVD-ROM drive with a beige tray panel. It reads DVD-ROM discs at up to 16X speed and CD-ROM discs at up to 48X speed. The drive connects via an IDE interface and includes a 512KB cache buffer.

Ideal for legacy IDE systems

This drive suits builders maintaining or repairing older desktop computers that still have an available IDE connector and 5.25 inch bay. It is not for systems lacking an IDE header or 5.25 inch mounting space. It is also not for users who need to write or burn CDs or DVDs.

IDE interface determines host compatibility

The single specification that decides fitment is the IDE interface; the host must provide a compatible 40-pin IDE connector and supporting controller. DVD-ROM read speeds reach 16X while CD-ROM reads reach 48X. Access times range from 80 to 220ms for DVD and 165ms for CD.

Questions about this item

How fast will the 16X DVD and 48X CD speeds actually read discs in a real system?

The drive reads DVD-ROM at 16X and CD-ROM at 48X; actual throughput depends on disc condition and system load, with DVD access times of 80-220ms and CD access at 165ms.

What does the IDE interface mean for data transfer limits on this drive?

The IDE connection carries all data and commands; peak DVD 16X and CD 48X rates are within the interface capability for this 512KB cache drive.

What space and mounting does the 5.25 inch beige tray drive need?

It fits a standard 5.25" bay, mounts horizontally or vertically, and uses the short half-height form factor with a beige front tray.
