Compact APS-C zoom for everyday shooting

This Sony E-mount lens covers a 16-50mm focal range, equivalent to 24-75mm on a 35mm frame. It is built for APS-C mirrorless bodies and retracts when powered off, keeping the camera bag light. The power zoom mechanism gives smooth focal-length changes for both stills and video.

Variable aperture defines low-light headroom

At the wide end the lens opens to f/3.5, narrowing to f/5.6 at 50mm, with a minimum aperture of f/22-36 for deep depth of field. The variable design keeps size down but limits light gathering indoors or at dusk. Minimum focus distance is 9.8 inches, allowing close-up detail but not true macro magnification.

Optical SteadyShot and retractable design change

Built-in image stabilisation reduces camera shake at slower shutter speeds, useful for handheld video and dim scenes. The power zoom and internal focus keep the lens length constant during operation. A seven-blade circular aperture produces smooth background blur when shooting wide open.

Questions about this item

Will this 16-50mm power zoom lens work with the manual aperture ring on my older APS-C E-mount body?

The lens has no aperture ring; exposure is controlled electronically from the camera body via the E-mount interface.

How can I confirm the Optical SteadyShot stabilisation is functioning after mounting the lens?

Half-press the shutter button and observe the viewfinder or screen; a steady image and the stabilisation icon indicate OSS is active.

Does the white box include a lens hood or do I need to buy one separately?

The supplied box contains the lens with front and rear caps only; a compatible petal-type hood is sold separately.
