Product identity and intended user

The Sony ECM-G1 is a shotgun microphone built for vloggers and content creators who record directly to cameras, smartphones or audio recorders. Its super-cardioid pattern focuses on sound in front of the capsule while rejecting off-axis noise. At 34.01 g it adds negligible weight to a camera rig or handheld grip.

Deciding specification: 14.6 mm capsule

The large 14.6 mm diaphragm captures a wider frequency range and higher sensitivity than typical on-camera microphones. This single element determines whether the ECM-G1 will meet a creator's quality threshold for dialogue, voice-over or ambient recording.

Capacity and limits

The 3.5 mm TRS output provides universal wired connectivity without batteries or wireless pairing. The detachable windscreen and internal anti-vibration structure handle moderate wind and handling noise, but extreme gusts or heavy mechanical shock will exceed the built-in isolation.

Questions about this item

How does the 14.6 mm capsule change the sound I actually record?

The large capsule captures a wider frequency range with lower self-noise, so dialogue and ambient detail sound fuller and cleaner than with smaller on-camera mics.

What does the 3.5 mm jack limit when I plug into different devices?

It provides an unbalanced analogue signal; cable runs over a few metres can pick up interference, and some smartphones need a TRRS adapter or a separate interface for monitoring.

Will the 34.01 g weight and shoe mount balance on my camera rig?

At 34.01 g it adds negligible mass to a cold-shoe mount, keeping the centre of gravity close to the body even with a small mirrorless camera.
