Ultra-compact 40mm G lens

The Sony FE 40mm F2.5 G is a full-frame E-mount prime designed for photographers who want G-series optical quality in a minimal form factor. Its F2.5 maximum aperture supports low-light shooting and shallow depth of field. Three aspherical elements and an extra-low dispersion element correct aberrations for corner-to-corner sharpness and colour accuracy.

Ideal for everyday carry; not for telephoto reach

This lens suits street, documentary and travel photographers who value a lightweight, dust- and moisture-resistant build with fast, quiet Dual XD Linear AF motors. An aperture ring with de-click switch and a focus hold button appeal to video users. Buyers needing longer focal lengths, wider maximum apertures or macro magnification should look elsewhere.

F2.5 maximum aperture

The F2.5 maximum aperture is the key specification that determines low-light capability and depth-of-field control. It provides a bright viewfinder image and enables selective focus techniques without the bulk of faster primes. The aperture range extends to F22 for extended depth of field when required.

Questions about this item

Will this 40 mm lens mount directly on my Sony E-mount mirrorless body?

Yes, the lens is built for Sony full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras and fits APS-C E-mount bodies without an adapter.

Can I use the aperture ring on this f/2.5 prime with my older Sony mirrorless camera?

The physical aperture ring works on any E-mount body; the de-click switch lets you choose clicked or smooth operation for video.

How do I confirm the autofocus is operating correctly after attaching the lens?

Half-press the shutter to engage the dual XD linear motors, watch the focus distance scale move internally, and verify sharp focus at the 11-inch minimum distance.
