Professional Reference Monitor Headphones

The Sony MDR-M1 is a closed-back dynamic headphone built for professional audio monitoring. Its lightweight 216g frame and thick, soft earpads are designed for comfort during extended studio sessions. Accurate sound localization supports precise microphone distance detection.

Closed Acoustic Structure Limits

The closed design provides high sound isolation that is essential for open-microphone monitoring and prevents bleed into recordings. This same isolation traps heat and pressure during very long sessions, which some users may find fatiguing compared to open-back alternatives. The structure prioritises accuracy over an expansive soundstage.

5 Hz to 80 kHz Frequency Response

The driver delivers an ultra-wideband range from 5 Hz to 80 kHz with low distortion across low and high frequencies. This specification determines whether the headphones capture the full detail required for critical mixing and mastering decisions. Buyers who need a narrower, consumer-tuned response should consider other models.

Questions about this item

Should I pick these 216 g closed-back monitors or a heavier open-back model for studio tracking?

The 216 g weight and closed acoustic structure give strong isolation for open-mic recording, while open-back designs leak sound and usually weigh more.

What does the 5 Hz to 80 kHz range actually deliver when I am mixing?

Ultra-wideband playback lets you hear sub-bass detail below typical monitoring limits and catch high-frequency artefacts up to 80 kHz for precise edits.

How does the closed acoustic structure affect isolation during vocal takes?

The closed design with advanced ear-pad insulation blocks external noise and prevents bleed into the microphone, enabling accurate monitoring at lower volumes.
