The large f/1.8 maximum aperture provides shallow depth of field and strong low-light capability, while the nine-blade circular diaphragm produces smooth bokeh. Stopping down to f/22 extends depth of field for landscape or architectural work. On APS-C bodies the 35mm-equivalent focal length becomes 82.5mm, shifting the lens into short telephoto territory. The minimum focus distance of 19.70 inches limits close-up work to moderate magnifications.
